Each one of their locations has huge buckets of peanuts available for customers to snack on as they wait for their burgers. At first glance, it seems strange that appetizers of peanuts are served for free in gigantic barrels at a fast food place, but Five Guys has offered the snacks for more than 20 years and it has become synonymous with their name.

Although there's no information on the Five Guys website about why they serve peanuts, a former Five Guys employee on Reddit claimed that the peanut ploy is designed solely to "distract the customers so they don't stare at us" (via PopSugar). Although Five Guys management may not say it in such blunt terms, this theory checks out. Here's why.

Given the fact that the chain is insistent that their burger patties must stay juicy, they've told their employees not to press down on the patties (via Taste of Home). This causes a longer cooking time for the burgers, which could result in the customers standing around for a while. If they've got peanuts to snack on, its not a problem, but without something to do, it's conceivable that they would get antsy.

The one rule on the books is that similar to an all-you-can-eat buffet, you're not allowed to take any peanuts with you but you can enjoy as many as you can while you're still in the store (via Fox). This is done to limit peanut exposure to people who might be allergic to them. People with peanut allergies are warned with signage on the door of every restaurant, but if the peanuts are brought out of the restaurant onto the streets, unintended consequences could result. And if the peanuts themselves aren't reason enough for people with peanut allergies to steer clear of Five Guys, they fry all of their French fries in 100 percent peanut oil (via Five Guys).

Anyone with a peanut allergy is not going to have a good time at Five Guys. Everything on the menu is cooked in 100 percent peanut oil and the restaurants offer free bins of peanuts to snack on while you wait for your order. Due to the pandemic, though, they are no longer sitting out. You have to ask for them, though Facebook comments to the above post indicate the peanuts might have quietly disappeared in many locations.

Okay, a little background information here. My husband also has severe food allergies. Quite a lot of them. The list is too long to print here, but two of the many items on his list are white potatoes and peanuts. Had I done my research, I might have suggested another restaurant for him to try. But I inadvertently sent him in blind.

Q: If so many people are allergic to peanuts, why does Five Guys continue to offer them?A: Over the past 20 years, peanuts have become part of the Five Guys identity. We by no means want to exclude guests from our store, but at the same time we would not want to disappoint our peanut eating guests. We make sure that we have signage on our doors and in our restaurants about the fact that we serve peanuts in bulk containers as we would never want someone to risk their health by coming into our restaurants.

I am a mom to peanut/tree nut allergic child and before I go to any new restaurant I always inquire what their policy is towards food allergies. It is MY job to make sure my child eats a safe meal. I do not begrudge Five Guys for serving peanuts. We live in America where we believe in free enterprise.

I have eaten at Five guys at the airport in DC and never saw any notice of peanuts/ or peanut oil. I am allergic to tree nuts not peanuts so it would not be a problem for me but it would be for my severely allergic son, fortunately he does not eat meat so he would not find himself at the restaurants but it makes me wonder if they are free with their peanuts at the airport where containment would be more of a problem since the space is wide open to the main terminal. Sheesh, all I can say is WAAAAH. There are places amongst us everywhere that serves peanuts, Five Guys is not alone. Just about any roadhouse/saloon style steakhouse you go to has mass quantities of peanuts as well.

duh people! check with your allergist. it is the protein in peanuts that you are allergic to. the oil has none of the protein in it. oil is highly refined and processed. you can eat the fries cooked in peanut oil.the whole peanuts laying around can definitely be a problem, though.if you have an allergy in your family, why dont you educate yourselves!! that is the best way to be safe.

5 Guys has actually saved us!! My son has a ton of food sensitivities (no, I did not say allergies and yes, I know the difference). He is sensitive to so much stuff that eating out became a big no, no. However, he is NOT sensitive to peanuts. And, 5 Guys makes a nice lettuce wrap for those who have gluten allergies/gluten sensitivities. So, while 5 Guys is a nightmare for anyone with a peanut allergy, it is great for my son. Thankfully, we are in a country where capitalism makes it possible to have something for everyone!!!

Five guys (and Chick-fil-A for that matter), use peanut oil to fry their food, but it is a highly refined peanut oil that has all the peanut proteins that cause the allergic reactions stripped from it. It is perfectly safe to eat 5 Guys french fries with a peanut allergy.

First things first: If you have a peanut allergy, Five Guys is not the place for you. There are free peanuts everywhere, and they fry everything in peanut oil. But if tree nuts are your only issue, Five Guys just might be the burger joint for you.

Peanut allergies are among the most common allergies in the US; however, this has not stopped Five Guys from serving it. Aside from putting up warning signs about the peanuts they serve, it will gladly offer peanut snacks to any willing candidate.

Giving the waiting customers some free peanuts to munch on while they wait for their orders buys them more time and keeps everyone happy in the meantime. Aside from that, offering peanuts to their customers is a huge reminder that they use peanut oil in making their fries.

Should someone miss the warnings on their menu, the big peanut bins they leave in view of everyone waiting to make an order are sure to catch attention. Seeing this will make you look into how they use peanuts in their food which is why we think the free peanuts will continue to be a part of Five Guys.

The peanuts are complementary and can be found on the side of the restaurant. They have boxes and boxes of them, so if you just had a burger and the nuts, you can still get full. The nuts are salted, so they nuts do have a bit of taste.
