Asterisk-based commercial PBX
The Asterisk software includes many features available in commercial and proprietary PBX systems: voice mail, conference calling, interactive voice response (phone menus), and automatic call distribution. Users can create new functionality by writing dial plan scripts in several of Asterisk's own extensions languages, by adding custom loadable modules written in PHP or C, or by implementing Asterisk Gateway Interface (AGI) programs using any programming language capable of communicating via the standard streams system (stdin and stdout) or by network TCP sockets.
While initially developed in the United States, Asterisk has become a popular VoIP PBX worldwide. It allows having multiple sets of voice prompts identified by language (and even multiple sets of prompts for each language) as well as support for time formats in different languages. Several sets of prompts for the interactive voice response and voice mail features are included with Asterisk: American, British, and Australian English, Canadian French, Japanese, Russian, Mexican Spanish and Swedish. A few novelty prompts are offered, such as jokes and a themed "zombie apocalypse" message for Halloween. Additionally, voice sets are offered for commercial sale in various languages, dialects, and genders.
Asterisk is a core component in many commercial products and open-source projects. Some of the commercial products are hardware and software bundles, for which the manufacturer supports and releases the software with an open-source distribution model.

Originally based off the Asterisk platform, Elastix offers open source unified communications server software including an IP PBX, email, IM, faxing and even collaboration functionality. With a strong focus on the entrepreneurial market, the tool is completely free for commercial or personal use. The project has also brought in features from other open-source projects including FreePBX, HylaFAX, Openfire, and Postfix to round out all of the UC offerings available.
FreePBX also makes it possible to establish your unlimited SIP Trunks thanks to SIPSTation integration directly into the platform. FreePBX also includes a long list of commercial modules and add-ons to enhance your system with even more features, and a reseller program to ensure proper training, quality, and stability to resellers and end-users. Essentially, the program will train and educate your sales and support team if you are looking to repackage and sell your product.
@comtech I was interested in the Call Recording Reports, Class of Service, Conference Pro, CRM Link, Endpoint Manager, Page Pro, Park Pro, Phoneapps, Queues Pro, Voicemail Reports, and Web Callme commercial addons if I went with FreePBX for business, however out of those, the Sangoma store only shows free trials for the CRM Link and Queues Pro.
FreePBX with no commercial licenses gets you more than VitalPBX free tier. After that it is ala cart for FreePBX. When you get PBXAct, you get all the commercial modules. You dont get ala carted for additional features.
The FreePBX Distro, however, is considered and treated as a fully commercial product. It provides a custom OS, installs everything in a specific way including all the free/commercial modules. It provides you free licensing to certain modules if you use Sangoma endpoints/devices (something the OSS version will not do).
Originally based on Asterisk, Elastix is a complete unified communications solution, including IP PBX, email, integrated with fax, IM, and collaboration functions. Though highly focused on the entrepreneurial market, the software is solely free for both commercial and personal use.
Asterisk was originally created as the engine for a PBX system (in fact, many refer to it as the Asterisk PBX) and includes all of the components necessary to build a powerful, scalable business phone system. These include advanced features that usually cost extra on a commercial phone system: things like voicemail, automated attendant, call queueing, conference bridging, parking, paging, and intercom calling.
With over 1 million production systems worldwide, the FreePBX has the largest marketshare. Once You have a basic PBX in place you can add commercial modules to add advanced features to an already feature rich base install of FreePBX. FreePBX also offers their PBXact commercial PBX sold and supported by FreePBX resellers.
One of the real beauties of Asterisk has always been its flexibility in talking to other PBXs, both commercial and open source. There are numerous reasons why you might want to try this. First, it makes it easy to migrate to a commercial platform where you can get support for mission critical telephony requirements. Second, you may want a hybrid setup where servers with on-site support personnel can run Asterisk while remote satellite offices can take advantage of a commercial PBX and the support options it offers. Third, you may want to take advantage of specific features that are only available by relying upon multiple PBX solutions. In the case of 3CX, their integrated softphone clients with one-click setup simplicity, conferencing and WebRTC apps, and Call Center offerings are the best in the business while providing unmatched VoIP security. Asterisk on the other hand is light-years ahead of almost everybody in the text-to-speech and voice recognition fields while offering the most powerful VoIP toolkit to build any custom VoIP application imaginable.
